The successful campaign resulted in the construction of the GENEVA Center with food service areas, 325-seat dining room, Celebration Center, and Creation Corner; new swimming pool, splash pad, and bathhouse; 20 new cabin sleeping areas; new entry drive, and infrastructure improvements. During the course of the campaign, 337 donors gave $11 million to make these new facilities possible.
While the facilities give GENEVA an incredible setting for camp, Executive Director Dave Vanderwel commented that “they are “just tools. They allow us to create an environment in which the real work of camp takes place—in the relationship kids develop with their counselor.”
Amway Co-Founder Richard DeVos, honored at the luncheon along with his wife, Helen, for their gift to wrap up the campaign, echoed that theme in his comments. “I’ve seen just how critical a camp experience can be as I’ve watched kids cling to the counselor who has given them love all week,” DeVos commented. “Camp is often the place where kids experience a sense of family that’s too often missing in this world. Camp is where we invite them into the family—the family of God.”
